Pharmacists in some provinces have prescribing powers

January 15, 2009

Alberta and BC pharmacists have been given the authority by government to prescribe medications. What impact will this have on people with chronic diseases who use medication on a daily or weekly basis to control their disease? Will it mean less visits to the family doctor for prescription renewals?

Does the pharmacist have the discretionary authority to substitute a generic drug for a patented drug?

Is patient safety an issue?

There is still much work to be done before I am comfortable with Pharmacist prescribing. Most Pharmacies do not have a consulting room that allows for patient privacy. Also, Pharmacist’s receive substantial rebates from Generic Drug companies as incentives to prescribe their product, does this mean I may not receive the most appropriate medication if they prescribe it? we all seen in the past with cross border pharmacies that some pharmacists do NOT have our best interests at heart!
